Housing Finance Bank Achieves Certification for Sustainability Standards, Demonstrating Its Dedication to Responsible Banking

Housing Finance Bank has  attained the Certificate of Acceptance from the Sustainability Standards and Certification Initiative (SSCI) at the 10th Global Sustainable Finance Conference held in Karlsruhe, Germany. This achievement highlights HFB’s strong commitment to sustainability, responsible business practices, and alignment with global Sustainable Development Goals and Uganda’s national development agenda.

The process of becoming a certified sustainable bank began earlier this year when HFB proactively subjected its Environmental, Social, and Governance practices to rigorous benchmarking and comprehensive evaluation. The aim was to integrate sustainable practices into the core of its business model.

Board Chairperson David G. Opiokello accepted the Certificate of Acceptance on behalf of the Bank during the conference. The delegation included Managing Director Micheal Mugabi and other executive team members, along with distinguished guests like Uganda’s Ambassador to Germany, H.E. Kuteesa, The Lord Mayor of Karlsruhe, Dr. Frank Mentrup, Mr. Arshad Rab, CEO of the European Organization for Sustainable Development, and the Chairman of the International Council of Sustainability Standards.

David G. Opiokello expressed his enthusiasm for the recognition, affirming that HFB’s commitment to a sustainable future is more than mere words—it’s a concrete commitment ingrained in the Bank’s strategic plan. The goal is to shape solutions for customers and stakeholders while promoting sustainable financial independence and realizing homeownership dreams for Ugandans.

Micheal Mugabi, HFB Managing Director, a key driver behind the Bank’s sustainability initiatives, also shared his thoughts on the accomplishment. He emphasized that sustainability is at the heart of the business strategy, essential for societal well-being, and integral to the long-term success of the institution. Mugabi stated that the recognition inspires HFB to continue leading in sustainable finance, fostering innovation for a greener future, and equipping Ugandans to achieve their financial aspirations.
