Bank of Uganda Governor Michael Atingi-Ego Named Among Top Global Central Bankers

The Governor of the Bank of Uganda (BoU), Michael Atingi-Ego, has been recognized as one of the world’s 25 best-performing central bank governors by Global Finance magazine in its annual Central Banker Report Cards 2025. The prestigious accolade celebrates his strong economic management and successful efforts in maintaining Uganda’s macroeconomic stability.

Graded on Performance Metrics
The annual report card, which assesses nearly 100 central bank governors, assigns grades from “A+” to “F” based on performance in key areas. Dr. Atingi-Ego received an impressive “A-” grade for his work in:

  • Controlling inflation
  • Promoting economic growth
  • Ensuring currency stability
  • Managing interest rates
  • Maintaining political independence

The recognition highlights Dr. Atingi-Ego’s success in guiding Uganda’s economy through challenging times. Under his leadership, the country’s economy grew to Shs226.3 trillion in the 2024/25 fiscal year. Inflation has also been kept stable, recorded at 3.8% in both July and August 2025. Furthermore, the Ugandan shilling has been praised for its relative stability, making it one of Africa’s most robust currencies.

This is not the first time Dr. Atingi-Ego has received international praise. In 2022, he was named “Central Bank Governor Of the Year” by African Banker Magazine in acknowledgment of his work to stabilize the exchange rate and manage inflation. His career has seen him rise through the ranks at the BoU and serve in international roles, including a position with the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

President Yoweri Museveni officially appointed Michael Atingi-Ego as the substantive governor in February 2025, after he had served in an acting capacity since the passing of his predecessor, Emmanuel Tumusiime-Mutebile. The recognition from Global Finance affirms the strength of his leadership and his contributions to Uganda’s economic resilience.
