Uber and Safaricom Partner to Enable M-Pesa Payments for Unbanked Riders

Uber and Safaricom have entered into a partnership that will enable  Payments for Unbanked Riders through M-Pesa.

Through this new partnership, UberEats delivery drivers will also receive their payments via the mobile money platform, and customers will have the option to use M-Pesa for their payments.

This collaboration aims to address the needs of approximately 20 percent of Uber’s riders who do not have access to traditional banking services. By integrating M-Pesa for trip payments, Uber seeks to provide a more convenient and accessible payment solution for its users.

Imran Manji, Head of East Africa at Uber, expressed excitement about bringing the ease and convenience of mobile money to their platform. He highlighted the significance of partnering with Safaricom to enhance financial inclusion in the country.

M-Pesa has already established its dominance in Kenya’s payment landscape, with a large number of individuals using it for various transactions. In the previous financial year alone, Safaricom processed a staggering 6.4 billion payments through M-Pesa.

Peter Ndegwa, CEO of Safaricom, emphasized the benefits of this partnership. He stated that the collaboration with Uber will not only provide a fully digital solution for thousands of drivers and delivery personnel but also offer millions of customers faster, secure, affordable, and convenient payment options through M-Pesa.

With M-Pesa’s widespread popularity and the partnership with Uber, this move is expected to drive further financial inclusion and digital payment adoption in Kenya.
